What Is Placenta Encapsulation? A Natural Option for Postpartum Recovery

Bringing new life into the world is a powerful and transformative experience—but it also takes a tremendous toll on your body, mind, and spirit. As a postpartum doula, one of the most common questions I get is: “What else can I do to support my recovery after birth?”

One option that many parents are exploring today is placenta encapsulation—a practice rooted in traditional medicine and gaining popularity for its potential to nourish and support new mothers during the postpartum period.

But what exactly is placenta encapsulation? Is it safe? And why do so many people swear by it?

Let’s explore this fascinating topic together.

🌿 What Is Placenta Encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta after birth—typically by steaming, dehydrating, grinding, and placing it into capsules—for the birthing parent to ingest during the postpartum period.

The goal? To reintroduce vital nutrients and hormones that may help support postpartum healing, mood stability, and energy levels.

🧠 Why Do People Choose Placenta Encapsulation?

While scientific research is still limited, many parents report a range of benefits from taking their placenta capsules, such as:

  • 🌸 Improved mood and emotional balance

  • 💧 Support for milk production

  • 💪 Increased energy during the early postpartum weeks

  • 🩸 Faster recovery and reduced postpartum bleeding

  • 🧘‍♀️ Overall sense of well-being

Anecdotally, many people who experienced baby blues or postpartum anxiety with a previous birth have noticed a smoother emotional transition when taking placenta capsules.

🔬 Is It Safe?

Safety is a top concern—and rightly so.

When prepared properly by a trained professional following strict sanitation protocols, placenta encapsulation is considered safe for most healthy individuals. However, it’s not recommended in cases where the birthing parent had:

  • A uterine infection during labor

  • Certain bloodborne illnesses

  • Medications or substances that may remain in the placenta

At Golden Light Doula, I follow safety standards modeled after guidelines from Placenta Association of Traditional Services (P.A.T.H.) and ensure that all equipment and surfaces are sanitized according to food-handling safety protocols. I offer transparent processing methods and am happy to answer any questions about the process.

🛠️ How Does the Process Work?

Here’s what you can expect if you choose placenta encapsulation:

  1. Consultation – We’ll talk about your birth plan, health history, and go over any questions you have.

  2. Pick-Up – I arrange for safe, timely pick-up of your placenta (often within 24 hours of birth).

  3. Processing – The placenta is dehydrated, ground into a powder, and encapsulated.

  4. Delivery – Your capsules are returned to you in a labeled, sealed jar with usage instructions, typically within 2–3 days.

Some parents also choose a placenta tincture, which is a longer-lasting option for hormone support that can be used well beyond the immediate postpartum period. These are currently offered as an add on. Please check out my services tab for more information.

🌼 Is It Right for You?

Placenta encapsulation is not for everyone—and that’s okay. The choice to use it should be based on what feels supportive, empowering, and aligned with your values and health needs.

As with any postpartum wellness practice, it’s important to talk to your provider and work with someone trained and trustworthy.
